PSYC 100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3-4: Central Nervous System, Twin, Cochlear Implant
Document Summary
Neurons (a group of neurons form nerves) - cells in nervous system that communicate with each other to perform information-processing tasks. Cajal discovered that neurons are complex structures, they have three main parts (cell body also called the soma, dendrites, and the axon) Neurons can come in different shapes and sizes. Largest component of neuron, coordinates information-processing tasks/keeps cell alive (contains nucleus). Surrounded by porous cell membrane, which allows molecules to follow into and out of the cell. Houses chromosomes that contain our dna receives info. from other neurons and relays it to cell body. Carries information to other neurons, muscles, or glands. Covered by myelin sheath junction between axon of a neuron and dendrite/cell body of another neuron. The space between the axon of one neuron and the dendrites/cell body of another neuron. An insulating layer of fatty material, composed of glial cells.
