Depressive disorders: involve change in mood in direction of depression. Bi- polar and related disorder: periods of depression cycling with periods of mania. Persistent depressive disorder: dysthymia- chronic low mood lasting for more than 2 years with at least 3 associating symptoms - found in people with high levels of stress, families of psychiatric abnormality, younger age onset, and higher comorbidity. Mania: distinct period of elevated, expansive or irritated mood that lasts at least one week. It is also accompanied by at least 3 symptoms. Hypomania: similar number of symptoms as mania but only present for < 4 days. Increase energy, decreased need for sleep, problems concentrating, impaired judgement, may feel chosen to fulfill a special mission".
