Correcional system is responsible for supervising people who have been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of criminal ofences. Only 20% of people in the jusice system are imprisoned. Depriving people of their liberty by insituionalizing them is considered a major infringement of civil rights, and it is permited only in limited circumstances. First canadian prison was built in kingston, on in 1835. Operated as a provincial jail unil 1868. Inmate strikes and riots during the 1930s led to the creaion of the archambault royal commission of inquiry. Mandate to invesigate and report on the condiion in canadian prisons. Applicaion of psychological theory and research to the correcional system. Provincial/territorial systems has jurisdicion over adults serving custody sentences that are less than two years, individuals who are being held while awaiing trial/sentencing [remand], as well as ofenders serving community sentences [probaion] Jails: house ofenders who have been given a sentence of less than two years.
