Describes the ideals standards model: a model of partner ideals in an intimate relationship. Article proposes three categories of partner ideals and three functions of ideals. Perceived discrepancies between ideals and reality can have different consequences. Ideals are composed of three components: the self, the partner, and the relationship. For example, the ideal of handsome and warm specifies what the self desires, what the partner should be like, and what that ideal would look like in a relationship with the self. Three dimensions of relationship ideals based on three routes to obtaining a mate and promoting one"s own reproductive fitness : Warmth, commitment, and intimacy indicates a devoted parent. Health, passion, and attractiveness indicates high fertility. Status and resources a mate with high social power. Hard to attract a partner that is so stellar.
