Research: immune system functioning is altered during exam times. Psychoneuroimmunology (pni): the study of the relationship between psychological states and the functioning of the immune system. Divided into 3 components: psychology (psycho) affects nervous system functioning (neuro), which then affects the immunity to diseases (immunology) Interested in the interactions between the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system. The importance of pni to health psychology. Represents an invaluable bridge between social scientists and health care providers and increases the credibility of health psychology in the eyes of health care providers. How immune system functioning is measured in pni research. Pni research: dv take the form of measures of immunocompetence. Dv = the variable that needs to be measure to determine if the manipulation has any effect. Can be naturally occurring or it can be experimentally induced. Researchers must usually assess a number of immune system cellular functions to ascertain the potential impact of a situation/mood state.
