Crucial element in typical interaction b/w patient & health care practitioner - nature of their r/s. Patients unable to participate in own care/make decisions for own welfare b/c of severity of their medical conditions. Applies when patients seek advice from physician. Patients answer questions physician asks about symptoms, but physician responsible for thinking & decision making. Patient has more responsibility than in other models. Physician & patient make joint decisions about every aspect of care. According to some researchers, assertiveness & active involvement on part of patient - precursors of effective partnership w/ physician. Mutual-participation model - seen as ideal r/s b/w physician & patient. However, typical r/s is one in which physician possesses greater degree of power than patient. Narrowly biomedical communication - characterized mainly by biomedical talk, closed- ended medical questions, little discussion of psychosocial issues. Expanded biomedical communication - includes numerous closed-ended medical questions & moderate levels of biomedical & psychosocial exchange b/w physician & patient.
