Document Summary

There are different kinds of cells each specialized for different functions but share a common structures. Typical cells have: an outer membrane enveloping the cell contents. Chemical factories called ribosomes where substances needed in cell function are synthesized. Energy powerhouses called mitochondria where glucose and other fuels are broken down to release energy. Then talking about cells and cellular structure, we will have in mind the cells of eukaryotes- that is organisms such as animals and plants whose cells have nuclei and mitochondria. In prokaryotes (organisms like bacteria) many of the principles are the same but some of the details are different. Cells are made up of numerous different chemical compounds, including a large number of different proteins. Proteins are large molecules made up of long chains of amino acids. There 20 types of amino acids and the sequence of different amino acid along the chain determines what the properties of the protein will be.
