Talcott parsons developed the concept of the sick (patient) role. Sick role: the set of expectations that surround a sick person and the experience of being sick. Earl koos: learned that people in higher occupational groups were better able to afford to play the sick role, a privilege less available to those of lower occupational group. Uniformity of the sick role can be based on gender, ethnic background, and age.
