Anne irwin: military is not a rite of passage; it prematurely ages veterans. There will be a lot of old young men going home. Combat services rite of passage; doesn"t permanently/completely alter participants" statuses from youth to adult manhood: instead, they turn into old men w/o passing through adulthood, transformation not complete. Plans/orders constantly changing; impossible to plan ahead or pace oneself. Soldier comes back physically/emotionally damaged they didn"t age into adults but into old men. Hegemonic: system of leadership; followers accept ideologies of the leader by offering accommodations to the followers but preserves the authority of the leader.
