Builds up large molecules from smaller ones. Uses hydrolysis ->breaks down proteins, lipids and carbs. Disaccharide + h2o -> preventing damage to body. Its polypeptide chain twists and coils into the particular shape that fits into the substrate. Active site combines with the substrate to form enzyme-substrate complex. It strains certain chemical bonds in substrate which takes up less energy to react. Reaction -> product -> enzyme released in original conformation + enzyme can bind to another substrate. Substrate+ enzyme -> enzyme-substrate complex -> product +enzyme molecule.
