Defining Health Research:
No universal definition of health
WHO, 1948: “health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and is
not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”
oCriticism – difficult to define “wellbeing” from the definition, because it includes
the word “complete” making it highly unlikely anyone would be “healthy” for a
reasonable amount of time. Also, doesn’t recognize health as a resource or
capacity, it is viewed as a state of being in this definition
Health is closely tied to personal circumstances which is related to social, cultural,
economic, and environmental influences
More holistic definition: “the capacity of people to adapt, to respond to, or control life’s
challenges and changes”
Updated WHO, 1984: … “the extent to which individual or group is able to realize
aspirations and satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. It is a
resource for everyday life, not the objective of living; it is a positive concept,
emphasizing social and personal resources and physical capabilities”
o Takes a multidisciplinary approach
Health research: any research that is relevant to health and incorporate the diverse
number of methodologies
Research: a systematic process of inquiry that aims to generate new knowledge
Spectrum of health research is very broad
Canadian Institute of Health Research: major federal agency for funding
Four main themes of health research (four pillars)
oBiomedical research: investigating the mechanisms of health or disease at the
cellular body system or whole body level
oClinical research: on or for patients and includes diagnosis and intervention
oHealth services and policy research: investigating how of health services how
they are delivered Quality and costs and how the are received
oSocial cultural and environmental and population health research: investigating
populations and broader health determinants
Purpose of Health Research:
Research is a central component to improving health
Constant and ongoing need to generate new knowledge
Four main categories: to describe, to explain, to predict, and to control
oExample for a description: describe the state of health, the way a disease
manifest, its signs and symptoms, may make comparisons between people or
groups to illustrate differences in health
Cohort study: group of people are follow over a period with repeated monitoring of
health risks and outcomes of interest
