Chapter 1: the evolution of psychology: structuralism: based on the notion that the task of psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements and investigate how these elements are related. Introspection: the careful, systematic self-observation of one"s own conscious experience. Review: critical thinking: the use of cognitive skills and strategies that increase the probability of a desirable outcome. Contributes to the regulation of attention, arousal and memory: dopamine: contributes to control of voluntary movement, pleasurable emotions. Sympathetic division: the branch of the autonomic nervous system that mobilizes the body"s resources for emergencies. Parasympathetic division: the branch of the autonomic nervous system that generally conserves bodily resources. Afferent nerve fibres: axons that carry information inward to the central nervous system from the periphery of the body. Cerebellum: coordination of movement and to the sense of equilibrium. Medulla: attached to the spinal cord, in charge of vital functions. Pons: bridge of fibres that connects the brain stem to the cerebellum.
