PSYC 1020H Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Detection Theory, Subliminal Stimuli, Absolute Threshold
Document Summary
Psychophysics: basic concepts and issues: psychophysics is the study of how physical stimuli are translated into psychological experience. Perception without awareness: can sensory stimuli that fall beneath the threshold of awareness still influence behaviour, subliminal perception is the registration of sensory input without conscious awareness. Sensory adaption: sensory adaption is a gradual decline in sensitivity due to prolonged stimulation, automatic, built-in process that keeps people tuned into the changes rather than the constants in their sensory input. The stimulus: light: light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that travels as a wave, moving, naturally enough, at the speed of light, light waves vary in amplitude, wavelength and purity, humans can only see the ultraviolet spectrum. Iris is the coloured ring around pupil passing into the rear chamber of the eye: eyes are constantly in motion, scanning the visual environment, called saccades.
