Endorphins: chemical substances in the nervous system that are similar in structure and acion to opiates; they are involved in pain reducion, pleasure, and memory, technically known as endogenous opioid pepides. Moivaion: an inferred process within a person or animal that causes movement either towards a goal or away from an unpleasant situaion. Intrinsic moivaion: the pursuit of an acivity for its own sake. Extrinsic moivaion: the pursuit of an acivity for external rewards, such as money or fame. Used to be believed that being overweight was a sign of emoional disturbance. Now it is known that fat people have the same emoional stability as skinny people. Heaviness is not always caused by overeaing. Set point: the geneically inluenced weight range for an individual; it is maintained by biological mechanisms that regulate food intake, fat reserves, and metabolism (can vary 10% in both direcions)
