Ranges from overt behavior (a rat running), to self-report, to recordings of physiological activity (blood pressure readings) Researchers know what to measure because they know the literature in their area of expertise. Also they develop ideas for new measures by modifying commonly used measures. Habituation: the gradual decrease in responding to repeated stimuli. If there is a great deal or error, than reliability is low and vise versa: reliability is assessed more formally in research that evaluates the adequacy of any type of psychological test. These instruments are designed to measure such constructs as personality factors (extroversion), abilities (intelligence), and attitudes (political beliefs) Validity: a behavioral measure is said to be valid if it measures what it is designed to measure, it should truly measure what it is said to measure, not something else, content validity.
