Document Summary

Vapour = gas in contact with the liquid or solid of the same compound. Closed vessel equil. between the vapour and the liquid or solid. Vapour pressure is the pressure of the vapour in a dynamic equilibrium with its liquid (or solid). Vapour pressure depends on temperature and is constant at a fixed given t. Practice ps #6 all questions can be solved. Sample final exam to be posted on friday. Boiling occurs when the vapour pressure equals the atmospheric pressure. Normal bp = vapour pressure is equal to 1 atm. The normal boiling point for water (blue curve) at 760 torr (=1atm) is 100 c. But at a high altitude, as on mount everest, the atmospheric pressure is much lower (~300 torr) and water will boil at ~70 c. The typical atmospheric pressure in edmonton is ~700 mm hg. The higher the vapour pressure, the more volatile the compound. Easy for molecules to escape to the vapour.
