Offer human body protection from environmental damage (harmful substances, radiation) and barrier for infectious organisms. Element in thermoregulation and synthesis of vitamin d (accounts for 16% of individual"s body weight including hair, nails and glands) Composed of 3 layers- epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layer: epidermis. Outermost layer and serves the location for vitamin d synthesis and body"s first line of defense. Contains no blood vessels, relies on the underlying dermis for delivery of nutrients and expulsion of waste products. 5 layer of epidermis are - stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum and stratum germinativum (basale) Innermost layer is germinativum and contains keratinocytes (composed of keratin which are tough proteins) and melanocytes. Keratinocytes differentiate (move to more superficial stratum and become anuclear and eventually shedded) Melanocyte produce 2 types of melanin, eumelanin (darker skin and hair) and pheomelanin (lighter skin and hair) First part of the body to initiate immune response b) dermis.
