Document Summary

Motivation - needs or desires that energize and direct (almost all) behaviours. Adaptive function: motivated behaviours promote survival advantages. Need to create a drive that motivates an organism to satisfy its need. Homeostasis: maintenance of the steady internal state. Motivation = expectancy x incentive value (e. g. reading textbook = higher grades x grades. Expectancy x value theory valuable to you, all must be present to work) Incentives - a positive/negative environmental stimulus that motivates behaviour. Intrinsic motivation will decrease as extrinsic motivation increases. Extrinsic motivation - doing to obtain external reward or to avoid punishment. Intrinsic motivation - doing it for enjoyment. *doing things intrinsically will often lead to better results and greater quality of work. Deficiency needs: food water, love respect etc. Lower level needs must be satisfied first, then higher level needs become more important. Ultimate goal = self-actualization/self of fulfilment/make best of one"s potentials. Other physiological factors - sensors in liver and hypothalamus.
