Changes in biological, physical and behavioural processes as we age. Cross sectional design: used to compare people of different ages at the same point in time, test each person and compare how well different age groups perform. ** different age groups, cohorts grew up in different historical periods drawback. Longitudinal design: repeatedly tests same cohort as it grows older, time consuming, sample can shrink over time. Sequential design: combines cross sectional and longitudinal approaches, can test several age cohorts as they get older and determine whether they follow a similar development pattern, most comprehensive, time consuming and costly. Germinal stage: aprox. first two weeks of development, when sperm fertilizes egg. 8 weeks= heart is beating, brain is forming, and facial features recognized. Fetal stage: lasts until birth, muscles get stronger and body systems continue to develop. Testis determining factor gene: specific gene contained in the y chromosome, triggers male sexual development.
