Document Summary
A psychological dysfunction within an individual that is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected. A psychological disorder characterized by marked and persistent fear of an object or situation. Breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning. Experiencing severe fear in all dates you go on. Exist on a continuum, not categories such as absent or present b/c you have to know where to draw to the line. Hence, having a dysfunction does not necessarily mean you have a psychological disorder. You have a psychological disorder if the individual is extremely upset. This criterion does not define abnormal behavior by itself. If the response is atypical, not culturally expected, or violates social norms, it is still insufficient to say the person has an abnormality. A psychological disorder is caused by a failure of one or more mechanisms to perform their evolved function and the dysfunction produces harm or distress.
