PSYCO275 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Axon, Retina, Bipolar Neuron
Document Summary
Psyco 275: chapter 3: cells of the nervous system. The neuron theory includes the ideas that the interactions between these discrete cells enable behaviour and that the more neurons an animal has, the more complex its behaviour. The cell body (soma) is the core region of the cell containing the nucleus and other organelles for making proteins. The axon is the root, or single ber, of a neuron that carries messages to other neurons. Neural network is the functional group of neurons that connects wide areas of the brain and spinal cord. The connectome is the comprehensive map of all structural connectivity (the physical wiring) in an organism"s nervous system. The dendritic spine is the protrusion that greatly increases the dendrite"s surface area; typical point of dendritic contact with the axons of other cells. The axon hillock is the juncture of soma and axon and the axon collateral is the branch of an axon.
