Document Summary

In extinction, the reinforcer is withheld following the behaviour and the behaviour decreases in the future. If a behaviour is no longer followed by a reinforcing consequence, the person will stop engaging in the behaviour. In extinction, the person stops engaging in the behaviour once the behaviour is no longer reinforced. We say that a behaviour has been extinguished or has undergone extinction when it is decreased with extinction. It is not appropriate to say the person is extinct. A behaviour decreases more rapidly when extinction follows continuous reinforcement than when extinction follows intermittent reinforcement. A punisher, also called an aversive stimulus, is the consequence that follows a behaviour that makes the behaviour less likely to occur. A neutral stimulus is established as a conditioned punisher by being paired with another punisher. An establishing operation is an antecedent event that makes a punisher more potent.
