Society is influenced by social structure and culture. Social structure: the way society is organized into different parts. Social institutions established and enduring pattern of social relationships. Culture system of behaviour, beliefs, knowledge, practices, values, including material such as buildings, tools, and sacred items. No agreement on what constitutes a culture. Theory culture : functionalism integrates people in groups. Symbolic interaction creates group identity from diverse cultural meanings. Cultural universals: common cultural features found in all societies. Age grading, division of labour, property rights, kinship groups, taboos, status differences. Cultural adaptation: process by which environmental pressures are addressed through changes in practices, traditions, behaviours. Society is based on tension and conflict over scarce resources. Link between money and success is an expression of the rulings elite"s power and influence. Requires a set of skills and knowledge, cultural capital, needed to acquire sophisticated. Imposes its values, language, and ways of behaving and interpreting behavior.
