Troubling youth- young offenders, gang members and street youth, are seen as threats to society. All youth are seen as troubling. youth- transitional time in life between childhood and maturity. Youth is a social construct with varying meaning. Largest group of offenders is between 18-24, in females its 30-39 (not youth crime). Youths have a higher rate of proneness to victimzationo. Moral panic- exaggerated and sensationalized concersn of particular phenomenon. Quality and effectiveness of parenting rather than the structure of the household itself is more important in determining delinquent behaviour. This parent style invovles having high expectaiotns for children, knowledge of and interest in who the children are socializing with and what they are doing, as clearly explained rules and consequences for breaking those rules. Any extremes in this area = negative parenting and negative outcome for children. The single most effective predictor of criminal activity among youth is criminal activity among friends.
