Media shows crime (especially violent) as being rampant and that everyone is at great risk of becoming next victim. In actuality, property and non-violent crime much more common, murders are result of spontaneous acts due to drug use or intense rage and most victims come from minority groups. All defendants in canada receive life sentence for murder and typically spend more time in prison than those in other western nations. Metaphor commonly applied to media is that they hold mirror up to world and reflect what is there. Funhouse mirror: what media should be seen as accentuates aspects of the world and of crime at the expense of others. National networks devote more time to crime than any other story. In toronto a studied show that media (news outlets) devoted of their time to stories re: deviance. Deviance is not just stories re: crime but those covering departures from organizational procedures and violations of common sense knowledge.
