Document Summary

Broadly speaking, a rule or regularity in the behavior of any element in the universe. Law in the political sense is a rule of human conduct that is enforced by the community. It is also the foundation of society, a set of rules of conduct by means of coercion or violence. Habit- a purely personal rule of conduct. Custom- a generally accepted custom or behavior adopted over time. Retribution- the punishment of those who violate the norms of society. Restitution- the provision of compensation to those who have been harmed by rulebreakers. Rehabilitation- a change in conduct that will prevent lawbreaking in the future. Restraint- the fear instilled in those who cannot be swayed by influence or authority. It is not necessary to know what a rule is in order to follow it; knowledge of how to act is sufficient. Rules are not necessarily created consciously; they can evolve from trial and error over time.
