PSYC 201 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Nucleus Accumbens, Prefrontal Cortex, Motivation
Document Summary
Chapter 11 motivation: an internal state or condition that directs behaviour motive: a need or desire. Instinct theory inborn behavioural tendencies, activated by stimuli in our environments. Drive reduction theory motivated by biological needs to maintain body in a state of equilibrium - homeostasis. :( voluntary decision making to be thrown out of emotional equilibrium: roller coasters. Arousal theory motivated by need to achieve optimum levels of arousal seek out interesting and exciting situations, motivated by curiosity. Yerkes-dodson law: ideal performance on a task occurs when the arousal level is optimized to the dif culty level > dif cult tasks optimal at lower arousal states, easy tasks optimal at higher arousal states. Intrinsic motivation: for satisfaction that is part of doing it. Extrinsic motivation: due to the in uence of factors outside ourselves. Ex. grades, money, recognition, good job incentives: external motives that indirectly indicate reward primary incentive: innate rewards/punishments.
