Sometimes other people must decide whether the individual affected needs treatment because they cannot make that judgement: dsm-5 lists 10 personality disorders. Prior to dsm-5, most personality disorders were axis ii of dsm-iv-tr: separate axis because they were distinct they were thought to be ingrained, inflexible, and less successfully treated. Some researchers have tried to map dsm-iv-tr pds into characteristics of the five- factor model (table 12. 1) Schedler and westen proposed an alternative model that identifies 12 personality dimensions that overlap with dsm criteria and introduce new aspects of personality not previously tapped in the dsm: no one approach dominates the field. Statistics and development: canadian data in prevalence of pds are lacking, except antisocial pd. Schizoid, narcissistic, and avoidant pds are rare less than 1% Paranoid, schizotypal, histrionic, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive 1-4% In general, the problems of people with pds continue: table 12. 2. When antisocial pd was labelled male, psychologists gave correct diagnosis.
