Chapter 6: the integument and related structures (p. 147-168, not 150-151 156-157 166) jan 13th/17. The integument is one of the largest and most extensive organs. Covers and protects underlying structures and forms a critical barrier. Involves every inch of external animal and it contiguous with the mucous membranes. Once alive, in histologically deeper layers and in earlier stages of development, these cells gave up vital organelles and nuclei to make room for the tough, protective substance called keratin. Keratinization is the process where cells expire and form vital protective barrier. Assists in maintenance of normal body temperature. Engaged in synthesis of vitamin d and storage of nutrients. Thinnest skin tends to occur around the eyes and scrotum. Thicken skin tends to occur at the center of the back, between the shoulder blades and on paw pads. Two distinct layers of skin: epidermis and dermis.
