Double descent: system tracing descent matrilineally for some purposes and matrilineally for others, patrilineal -> land ownership, matrilineal -> animal ownership, women take great deal in farming. Ambilineal descent: system in which an individual may af liate with the mother"s or father"s descent group, provides exibility. Forms and functions in descent groups: provide warmth and sense of security, provide security and services in work, provide mutual aid to members, support the elderly and the in rm, help with marriages and deaths, repository of religious traditions. Lineage: corporate descent group whose members trace their genealogical links to a common ancestor, real life of people tracing to a know common ancestor.
