Document Summary

Nervous system: master controlling and communication system of the body. Means of communicating with body cells, is electrical impulses, which are rapid and specific and cause almost immediate responses. Nervous system doesn"t work alone to regulate and maintain body homeostasis, also endocrine organs produce hormones. 3 functions: uses sensory receptors to monitor changes occurring both inside and outside the body. Changes are stimuli, and gathered information is sensory input: processes and interprets the sensory input and decides what should be done at each moment (integration) It then effects, or causes, a response by activating muscles or glands (effectors) via motor output. Peripheral nervous system (pns): outside the cns. Consists mainly of the nerves the extend from the brain and spinal cord. Spinal nerves carry impulses to and from the spinal cord. Cranial nerves carry impulses to and from the brain.
