Lighten the skull, act as resonance chambers for speech and produce mucus which drains into nasal cavities. Nasolacrimal ducts: drain tears from the eyes and empty into the nasal cavities: blowing your nose has a suctioning effect that helps drain the sinuses. Problems: cleft palate: failure of the bones forming the palate to fuse medially.
