Chapter 4: application software: programs that let you work and play. Software: a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. Program: an instructions set provides a means for us to interact with use the computer. Computer has two main types of software: application software: used to do tasks at home, school and work, system software: helps run the computer and coordination instructions between application software and computer"s hardware devices. Two types of software that you can install on your computer: proprietary (commercial) software: software you can buy such as microsoft office, open source: free software that is available with few licensing and copyright restrictions. A mobile device is highly on the rise, some studies indicate that a mobile payments and mobile coupons/barcodes will be the prime use. Spreadsheet software: software that lets you make calculations and perform numerical analyses. Presentation software: allows you to create slides to produce high-quality presentations.
