Literally means, drinking together , a ritualized gathering of privileged males who, after dining together, drank wine mixed with water and entertained themselves with perry, music, games, and sexual activity. Began with the adoption of eating and drinking on reclined chairs from the near east. Symposiasts reclined on their left elbow so that they could eat and drink with their right hand (right-handedness was a requirement) Attended by no more than 1 or 2 dozen men. Was restricted to a select group of high class men who used the symposium as a means of solidifying their own outlook on the world. Also included a communal sacri ce, accompanied by music of the aulos; participants wore wreaths and were given equal amounts of the sacri cial meat. Took place in a room called the andron the gentlemen"s quarters .
