Software – A set of instructions that tells the computer what to do
Program – An instruction set also called a program provides a means for us to
interact with and use the computer
Open Source Software – Program code that is publicly available and has few
Proprietary Software- Neither free nor open source, the code can be copied,
distributed, or changed without the stringent copyright protections of software
products you purchase.
Tax Preparation Software – Enable you to prepare your state and federal taxes on
your own instead of hiring a professional, examples would be TurboTax and H&R
Block at home.
Simulation Programs –Allow users to experience or control the software as if it
were the actual software or an actual event. Include commercial and military flight
training, surgical instrument training, and machine operation training.
Desktop Publishing Software – Allows you to incorporate and arrange graphics
and text in your documents in creative ways. Examples would be QuarkXpress and
Project Management Software- Helps project managers create and modify
scheduling charts, which help them plan and track specific tasks and coordinate
personnel resources. Example Microsoft project
