As educator literature becomes more sophisticated and complex, so do the demands on the practitioner. We need to also be aware of the variety of interpretations of transformative learning theory and understand how they apply differently to other individuals. Our way of teaching depends in part on what we are teaching. The current adult and higher education literature places little emphasis on the acquisition of technical knowledge even though this is what many persons do. Instrumental learning (acquisition of technical knowledge) spirals into transformative learning and how in turn transformative learning can lead persons to further need of instrumental learning. Students learn to critically examine and question techniques and diagnostic procedures not accepting information at face value but recognizing a body of knowledge that is learned, practiced and applied. In this context, educators are experts and authorities in their subject areas.
