Food additive is any substance added to food. Intentional additive: purposely added and must receive approval from the food and drug. Administration before use sugar, salt, corn syrup etc. Indirect additive: are contaminants, accidentally got into food during production, processing, or packaging. Adulteration: deliberate addition of cheap ingredients to food to make it appear high quality (illegal in us) Additives efficacy- a food additive must function in food systems in accordance with its stated function under specific conditions of use. Federal food, drug, and cosmetic act (ffdca)- 1938; gave fda authority over food and food ingredients and defined requirements for truthful labelling of ingredients; required a standard identity for several special foods. Standard identity: legal standard identified by the fda for a limited number of staple foods, regarding a foods minimum quality specifications, including permitted ingredients and processing requirements, if any.
