Marriage is one possible outcome following the selection of a life partner or mate. Some individuals never marry, some transition from cohabitation to marriage, and other marry prior to living together. Couples may receive some exogenous payoff by marrying, socially normative customs followed = rewards by society, thus, serve rite of passage into adulthoods. Marriage may act as a commitment device. Marriage may be used as a signalling device. Back then: married for political or economic reasons, not for love. Today: marry for religious reasons, emotional security, companionship, intense physical attraction, pressured into it by family or unplanned pregnancy, get married before they start a family as children are brought into the relationship. Crude marriage rates: estimates number of marriages for every 1000 people in a given year: problem: denominator in equation includes unmarriageable people such as children, not a good indicator of likelihood of marriage.
