Correlation: a mathematical method for showing whether a relationship exists between factors. Cross-sectional research: a method of research that studies individuals of different ages and compares them in relation to the factor under investigation. Developmental task: a task that an individual is expected to achieve at a particular stage in development. Direct observation: a research method in which the researcher watches and records behaviour. Exosystem: institutions and organizations in society in which individuals do not take an active part, but that affect them through the mesosystem or microsystem. Experiment: a research method that involves changing conditions deliberately and observing any changes in behaviour that results.
