Document Summary

Socialization is the passing on to new members of society a culture"s way of thinking and acting. It is strongest in childhood, but takes place at each role or status change through life. Although all aspects of society are involved in socialization, the family plays a key role. Each individual, however, remains free to accept or reject social values and norms. The roles people are expected to fill have changed over time. In earlier times, children at a young age were involved in the family livelihood, until prevented by labour and social attendance laws. In the 20th century, the child became a source of emotional satisfaction. A scientific approach to child rearing was stressed by child development experts. Applying it often meant going against the traditions of minority groups, such as those of aboriginal peoples. Childhood came to be considered a special time and services and institutions arose to meet its needs.
