Gender- psychological state of being male or female. Gender typing- children acquire behavior that is deemed appropriate to their sex. 23 chromosomes from male parent combine with 23 from female. Embryo- begin with implantation of fertilized ovum and concludes with development of organ systems. During first 6 weeks embryonic structures of both sexes develop along similar lines. 7th week, genetic code xx or xy begins. Androgens- male sex hormones (without this, all would develop female external reproductive organs) Testosterone- male sex hormone that fosters the development of male sex characteristics and is connected with sex drive. Descent of testes/ovaries- by 10 weeks, testes/ovaries descended, 4 months after conception, testes descend in scrotal sac. Cryptorchidism: condition in which at least 1 of testes fail to descend. Men fail to develop appropriate secondary sex characteristics. Disorder in which female just has 1 x sex chromosome (x instead of xx) Treated with hormones to spur development of secondary sex characteristics.
