Similarities: both use data reduction techniques in order to make statements about social life, data reduction: the analytic process of going from a large collection of data to more generalizable statements about social life. Quantitative research: causal (independent variable x dependent variable y) Qualitative research: pieces of a puzzle plausible explanations: the goal is to eliminate highly unlikely explanations and increase the plausibility of others, uses temporal order to verify a sequence of events. Qualitative researchers refine concepts grounded in data (during data collection) Conceptualization is how qualitative researchers organize & make sense of data: organize data on the basis of themes, concepts, or similar features, conceptualize as they read through and ask critical questions of data. In qualitative data analysis, ideas & evidence are mutually interdependent. Encourages higher-level thinking about data and moves a researcher toward theoretical generalizations.
