Document Summary

Chapter 10: getting a new behaviour to occur with. Three basic stages in any shaping procedure: specify the final desires behaviour. Identify a response that could be used as a starting point in working towards the final. Desired behaviour: reinforce the starting response; then reinforce closer and closer approximations until. Shaping: development of a new behaviour by the reinforcement of successive approximations of that behaviours and the extinction of earlier approximations of that behaviour until the new behaviour occurs; also referred to as the method of successive approximations. The five dimensions of behaviour that can be shaped: Topography: spatial con guration or form of a particular response. Frequency: number of instances that occur in a given period of time. Latency: time between the occurrence of a stimulus and response evoked by that stimulus. Intensity: physical effect the response has or potentially has on the environment.
