Chapter 8: how to conduct a five-stage counseling session using only listening skills. Uses microskills of using open and closed questions, encouraging, paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, and summarizing (i n no particular order) Supplemented by attending behaviour and client observation skills. Select and practice all elements of the basic listening sequence. Client will discuss their stories, issues or concerns. Clients will feel that their stories have been heard (cid:494) Five stage model: empathic relationship, story and strengths, goals, restory, action. Provide an organizing framework for using the microskills with multiple theories of counseling and psychotherapy. Franklin- problem solving: story and strengths, restory, action five stage theory is a extension of this theory. Empathic relationship: initiating the sessions; rapport and structuring. Story and strengths: gathering the data, drawing out stories. Only use the dimensions that are authentic to each session. Circle represents egalitarian relationship in which the counselor and client work together.
