GEOG 3490 Chapter 7: Tourism and Sustainability Chapter 7
Document Summary
In this unit, our focus is on the tourism industry. In contrast with some other industries (e. g. the auto industry), the tourism industry is composed of a wide variety of types of companies that vary in size, location, and service or product offered, among other factors. This week we will examine these diverse companies and consider their relative economic impact and influence, in both mass tourism and new tourism. We will also consider specific opportunities and constraints for sustainability in the tourism industry. When we talk about the tourism industry", we are typically referring to three main types of businesses: accommodation (hotels, etc. ), carriers (airlines, cruise lines, bus lines), and tour operators (e. g. signature vacations, sunquest). Within each of these sectors, there is substantial variation in size and scope of operation. The accommodation sector is also diverse, including large transnational corporations (e. g. hilton, sheraton), medium-sized hotels, and small independently run hostels or lodges.
