Document Summary

This unit examines the tourist, the actor around which all of our discussions revolve. Tourists may or may not have the most power in any particular situation, but without tourists, there would be no tourism. While it is important to consider the broader political economy of tourism, this does not negate the need to examine the role played by tourists themselves. Unit 02, in order to have tourism, we need to have individuals with the time, resources, and motivation to travel. There are several classic studies of tourist motivations if you have paused to consider your own motivations, my guess is that these will not be surprising to you. Wanderlust: tourists want to leave things which are familiar for a first hand view of different and exciting cultures and people, represents a temporary desire to exchange everyday life for something exotic.
