Week 8The Holocaust and beyondChapter 10Even before the war Nazi Nuremberg laws had deprived German jews of their civil rights 1935 and storm troopers had wrecked their businesses and places of worship But the war provided the opportunity for the final solution of what the nazis called the jewish problem After Polands defeatits 3 million jews were sealed into walled urban ghettos Special extermination units accompanied the german army into the Soviet Union where thousands were shot and hastily buried dead or alive in mass graves Heinrich Himmler was the head of the SS Himmler called on modern technology to create the extermination camps Opened in 194142 with akind of production line for death including specially designed gas chambers and crematoria Into these camps the Nazis slowly empties the rest of Europe to the east never to return They continued to kill jews even while on the brink of defeat Trainloads of jews headed to death camps 6 million in total were killed Auschwitz killed a million alone The rest of the world did little to stop such indifference reinforced the zionist argument that jews could be safe only in a country of their own that they could defend themselves The Germans dehumanized the jews they were stereotyped and that made it easier to kill them it was believed that by killing them Germanys problems would be solved The Centurys first GenocideA coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of the essential foundations of the life of national groups with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves GenocideRaphael Lemkin coined the word Genocide and he used to describe the nazis systematic extermination of Gypsies poles Russians and jews The centurys first
