The social meanings of violence in early modern england. Has always been a debate about the level an the nature of violence within the early modern english society focusing on the murder rate (indication of violence for statistic purposes). It is the pessimists that see this as a constant violence and struggle while the optimists simply claims that this period was a little different than ours today. This reading suggests that we look for the social meaning of violence and move away from the statistics. The way historians think about violence has been very influenced from weber and his ideology that coercion by violence is the monopoly of the state (page 3). The only way to move on from this point of view is to focus on behavior as a hole and simply forget the language. Any act of violence that causes physical harm (whippings, execution vs. those that are not as direct such as wife beating).
