MUSC 2150 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Skiffle, The Who
Document Summary
Prior to 1964, british music was secondary to american; britain imported far more popular music than it exported. American armed forces brought their culture overseas with them during wwii, resulting in tremendous enthusiasm for american pop culture in britain following the war. The idea of the teenager was seen as an american innovation. Rock and roll became the music of the teenage rebellion in the rebuilding years of the 1950s. Prior to 1964, independent labels did not have much influence and music was dominated by a select few labels, who controlled much of pop music. Skiffle: a new style made popular by tony donegan ( lonnie ) that combined folk music with an up-tempo rhythmic feel. The biggest challenge of the late 1950s and early 1960s was placing more domestic records on the british charts (despite some homegrown success, they were still dominated by american records) Beatles began as a skiffle band then became a huge pop group overnight .
