She is one of the greatest composers of the 19th century. She is not the composer however but the two work together. Clara was a published composer and the first woman to break into the world of touring virtuosos. The piano was the solo instrument of excellence in the romantic period. Virtuoso pianists were the musical superstars of their day and celebrated far and wide for their techniques and showmanship. Robert shumann"s carnaval is a series of piano pieces tied together by their overarching literary theme and shared musical material. Character pieces: they are charming and short with descriptive and fanciful titles. Some of the pieces are named after persons he knew, some associated with members of the carnival. He imagines that they are all guests at a masked ball, dancing to the accompaniment of lively music most are in dance rhythms.
